Day 10: David

“Travel and change of place impart new vigor to the mind.” – Seneca

Best Moments

1. Finally finding some perfume in Florence after searching everywhere
2. Standing before David in person and understanding why it is so famous
3. Dinner together with great wine and amazing gnocchi in a white sauce (the next thing I am going to try to make at home)
4. Night stroll to the highest point in Florence (Piazzale Michelangelo)
5. Looking over Florence in the moonlight

Daily Recap
*My morning began with saying goodbye to Venice.  Two days is too short, but there is so much more to see in other places.

*Florence is a city I have anticipated visiting for many years now.  One of my professors told me that if I ever visit Europe, Florence is a must.  Now I understand why.

*My first experience in Florence involved shopping.  After being on the road for a few days, there were a couple things I needed.  If shopping is your passion, there is a lot of it that can be done in Florence.

*Later in the afternoon, we rejoined for a look at David.  I don't know how many pictures I've seen of David, but seeing it in person was more meaningful than I could have imagined.

*Dinner was heavenly.  I'd never had gnocchi before, but now it will be part of my diet.  Each night, at the end of the meal, I feel a sense of ecstasy.  Europeans must put more than food in their recipes because I am so happy after a great meal.

Personal Connections

*People in Florence seem to move fast.  There are scooters everywhere.  The people seem different here compared to Venice.  I think Venice is like its own country sometimes.

*Going out at night is a great way to watch the Florence residents.  While walking, we stumbled upon the artist you see on the left.  I was amazed by the work he did with some simple sidewalk chalk.  I would find it painful to create something so great to see it washed away the next day.

I remember learning about Michelangelo and his work in high school, but to see it standing before me was impressive.  It truly is a sight to see how art had changed and how realistic marble could be.
